Time has always been a loaded concept for me. There never seems to be enough time.

I am starting to realize, however, that there is actually just as much time as there is. I know that probably sounds confusing, but what I mean is, a day is 24 hours long whether I decide that it’s “enough” time or “not enough” time.

Therefore, it has to do with the choices I make regarding how I spend my time. There is only so much time, yes. Therefore, I must be the strict gatekeeper at the bounds of my time, only allowing in activities that I consciously choose to spend time on. Ideally, these are activities that feed me, that make me come alive.

For me, e-mail—and, well, yeah. Okay. I guess a couple of social media sites—are huge time drains. They can be really potent and wonderful tools for connecting with others and sharing ideas, but I am still figuring out how to use them in a productive and healthy way. And I don’t think that checking e-mail every five minutes is healthy. Ooh, ooh, ooh! I find myself thinking. Did I get a new e-mail? How about now? Now? How about now?

So I guess I want to become a more selective and responsible gatekeeper. It will be an ongoing project, I am sure. And no, the irony has not escaped me that I am blogging about spending less time online, and will proceed to post a link to my blog on Facebook and Twitter following this post’s completion.

*Sigh*

So, today, I’m getting clear on how I want to use my time.

  1. I came across your blog this evening while wasting time on the computer. This month I’ve been writing goals for my life. After writing about 15 of them over the weekend I felt overwhelmed because I felt like I didn’t have the time to work towards the things I really wanted to accomplish. Last night while laying in bed I had similar thoughts as those you posted. My time is what I make of it. I mentally went through a typical day and noted my ‘time wasters’. The Internet is a huge time waster what with facebook and online shopping, as is the amount of time I spend on the phone. I also must be a better gatekeeper of my time. Thanks for your post. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who has these thoughts 🙂

    • Thank you so much for your comment! It’s nice for me to know that I’m not alone as well. : ) I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

  2. You write with a keen sense of self-awareness that will serve you well as you write your way through a novel. If you know yourself, you’ll have an easier time getting to know your characters. I’m looking forward to reading about your progress — best of luck!
